Albert Einstein is quoted as saying: “there are two ways you can live your life … as if nothing is a miracle or as if everything is a miracle”. The matrix we live in can be challenging. Everywhere around you there’s oodles of reasons why to be invested in the drama – it seems everybody else is doing it! And the world of physicality is so alluring, with its tantalisations and temptations, society has really perfected the art of pulling you into some illusionary ‘entertainment’. But what if you resist that? What if instead, you look deeply into every moment and challenge the alluring seduction that would contract you down. What happens if you always look for the deeper purpose, the deeper reason, the deeper meaning? How might you experience life differently?

The home I know is in the higher dimensions. Everything is interconnected. There is total transparency between beings. The deeper purpose is observed, understood, known. There is flow in harmony with other life. Nothing is missing. The driving impulse of the moment is to learn more, to expand more, to express more. Every moment speaks with the syllables of the divine – you follow the path life sings to you, guiding you like a choir of angels.

It’s not at all like that here! Although I’ve also found it can be. You just have to work a little harder at it. It seems life has drawn me down into the density to discover this very facet and to work with others to do the same.

There’s lots to enjoy about being in physical incarnation of course. There’s perhaps no other place in the universe where the density increases the sense of separation like on earth. By having this density of relativity, means the illusion of life feels really real. Like eating food for example or the joy of love between two apparently separate people. It’s the coming together from the separation into divine union that creates such magic. But it’s so easy to get lost in this illusion too: that chocolate tastes just too good, the allurement of partnership becomes oh so needy. I’m not saying not to enjoy these things, what I’m saying is to practice always looking for the deeper meaning.

The deeper meaning is an intangible essence of life. It is the flow that’s always coaxing you to a deeper understanding, a deeper sense of being. It’s always about finding a more complete expression, in the simplest of things.

For me it’s about transcending the moment. So take a typical holiday period (like Christmas for example). Society creates the humungous sense of expectation and the idea that to consume is good. The result is either guilt because you’ve had too much or else sense of lack because the material never quite fulfills. So instead, I always work to ‘penetrate’ the experience. What do I mean by this?

1: penetrate the experience with deep presence
Well imagine you’re eating a tasty chocolate cake (raw and sugar free of course!), then if you really take your time and taste every single morsel with the abundance of presence (what some call ‘mindfulness’), then firstly not only do you enjoy it more, but you need much less to enjoy it. So you’re becoming as one with the experience – as “The One” in the experience.

2: soften deeply into the situation
If you find yourself contracting down in some way, then deeply confront the feeling. So let’s say you had an expectation or need of the moment to be a particular way and it’s not turning out like you might have expected. Well rather than changing the circumstances, soften deeply into the situation that the moment is now presenting. Feel any internal contraction and work to expand out of it. It happens by accepting it totally – feeling the ‘heat of the coals’ before you drop them.

3: look for the deeper meaning

Finally, it’s about then recognising that the moment always has a deeper meaning, a deeper flow. If you’ve softened the tightness of neediness or expectation, then your soul should now be breaking through. The soul will ‘want’ to be aligning with the flow of other life around you. Look for the synchronicity, the harmonies that invite you to

“go this way now”

. Then surrender to the pull, to the deeper expression and give yourself entirely to it. It could mean something as simple as driving a different way home today and watching the variance in the signs along the path. What are they saying? If they were inviting a deeper sense of you to emerge, what would that sense be? How could you embody that sense now?

A quick glance at the new position of top supercomputers reveals a surprising showing by one of the world’s technological powerhouses: Taiwan does not possess a single machine powerful enough to make the Top500.org list. While there are many nations that don’t make the list, Taiwan is extraordinary in that it has such an outsized grip on the computer chip industry. What’s more, its political rival, China, not only has the world’s top machine, it now has more ranking supercomputers than any nation except the United States.

It has been a long decline. Taiwan’s most powerful supercomputer, the Advanced Large-scale Parallel Supercluster, also known as ALPS or Windrider, ranked 42nd in June 2011, shortly after its launch.

But the process of updating Taiwan’s supercomputing infrastructure has been slowed by ineffective government budget allocation. Since 2013, the National Center for High-performance Computing (NCHC), located in Hsinchu City, which operates Windrider, has failed twice to get enough of a budget boost to strengthen its supercomputing ability. While other countries poured money into the replacement of powerful supercomputers as a way to show national power, Windrider fell to 303rd and then 445th in June 2014 and June 2015.

“If our three-year budget proposal is approved early [in 2016], Taiwan would gain a much better position on the Top 500 in 2018, when a 2-petaflops system is launched,” says Jyun-Hwei Tsai, deputy director general of NCHC. If such a system were launched today, it would rank 36th.

Officials at the Ministry of Science and Technology say they have prioritized supercomputing in their annual budget proposal– as they did in 2013 and in 2014. However, it’s really up to “the Cabinet,” the executive branch of the Taiwanese government.

Cabinet spokesman Sun Lih-chyun says the government fully understands the importance of supercomputing and points out that Taiwan has promoted cloud computing and big-data projects. “It remains uncertain when sufficient budget would be made available for new systems. We’re still reviewing the budget proposal. The decision has not yet been made,” Sun says.

“The Cabinet will make a final decision early [this] year,” adds Tzong-Chyuan Chen, director general of the Department of Foresight and Innovation Policies under the ministry. “In economic recession years, it’s difficult to gain budget for important science and technology projects with long-term impacts, which are not yet felt.”.

It wasn’t always like this. In June 2002, an IBM system at the NCHC center ranked 60th. In June 2007, the center’s newest system, called Iris, ranked 35th.

Iris’s place on the list wasn’t long-lived. It was displaced by November 2009 due to a boom in supercomputer installations in many other countries, such as China. The huge increase in China’s supercomputing power in recent years can be attributed in part to some government-backed companies, such as Sugon Information Industry Co. and Inspur Group Co., which together constructed 64 of the ranked systems.

According to NCHC’s Tsai, the big strides taken by other countries is a sore point in Taiwan. “We don’t compare ourselves with big countries, such as China, Japan, and the United States. What hinders us more is that, in South Korea, the momentum of national supercomputing is now stronger than ours,” he says. Currently, South Korea’s two fastest systems rank 29th and 30th.

It’s not as if there isn’t much demand for supercomputing in Taiwan. Currently, Taiwan’s Windrider utilization exceeds 80 percent. “It’s like a crowded superhighway. And we’ve heard grievances from some users,” Tsai says.

According to Tsai, Windrider is most significantly used in basic physics, chemistry, and biomedical imaging. But certain key fields get prioritized access. Those include ecological studies, climate change, and natural disasters.

“Taiwan is prone to natural disasters, such as typhoons, floods, and earthquakes. A powerful database, backed by powerful supercomputing systems, is essential for conducting better predictions of typhoons,” Tsai says.

Due to the limitations of Taiwan’s supercomputing capability, some scientists have taken to building their own computer clusters and speeding up existing resources with graphics processing unit-based accelerators.

Tzihong Chiueh, a theoretical astrophysicist at National Taiwan University, in Taipei, says he and his colleagues there have not relied on NCHC’s system for years. Chiueh, whose team has since 2013 been taking advantage of a self-built system that can reach tens of teraflops, says, “The investment [in a petaflops-scale system] should indeed be prioritized. I hope it can work at least 10 times faster than the current system.”

Up until recent times, a man had the upper hand because he had the power to protect and feed the family. In the hunting days, men had the upper body strength to hunt more effectively. As the hunting era ended, we came into the food growing society. Men dominated the scene as the society needed warriors to protect its land, women, and property. Again, men were in the driving seat as their physical strength moved the machines in the industrial-society.

But we have now entered a highly automated, computerized, and technically sophisticated society. Physical strength is not required to hold the economic power; in fact, physical labor jobs are among the low- income jobs. Today, we need people who can use information and facts to run computers and machines. In this “information and service age,” we need high level of education and the skills such as those of organization, communication, team building, arbitration, understanding, and empathy with others.

Unfortunately, many families are still raising boys to be hunters, soldiers, or physical laborers. As a result, when boys become “tough and aggressive,” they begin to feel superior and believe that there is nothing else they need to learn or do in order to rule the world.

If boys don’t learn to get along with others, express calmly what is bothering them rather than throw a temper, resolve conflicts peacefully rather than aggressively, build a consensus rather than control, they will find themselves misfits and out-of place. Unfortunately, the machismo and masculine mystique which many men strive for doesn’t include any of these skills. To do better in tomorrow’s world, men will have to learn these skills.

Within a few months of my coming to the U.S., I became aware of a deep chasm that exists between men and women in our society. I first came to work in the admission unit of a hospital. It was a wonderful place to work. I felt there was a lot of camaraderie in the people working in this building.

Coming nine thousand miles away from my roots, I couldn’t have asked for a better place. Women working in this large building would come to me and tell me about the problems they were having at home, their physical problems, problems with their kids, and their partners. I felt very privileged to be the confidante of so many women, but I often wondered what was going on.

I thought to myself, they are confiding in me because women are kind and sensitive and they want me to feel at home. Other times, I thought they came to me because they knew that I am a therapist and I am used to listening to people’s problems. Then I found out the real reason.

One day at lunch hour, practically half of the women working in that building came to me and said, “Dr. Sharma, do us a favor. Take the men of this building somewhere and instruct them how to talk to women and how to listen to them.”

I asked them what the problem was. They told me that men are so busy being macho men that they don’t really listen. They don’t let us forget that they are superior and we women know nothing. When they talk to us we feel they are putting us down, making fun of us or treating us as sex objects.

Clearly, there seemed to be two species here, a male and a female species, that had very little in common. I am reminded of this encounter whenever I see the title of a current bestseller, “Men are from Mars and women are from Venus.”

1. Fuel-cell vehicles
Zero-emission cars that run on hydrogen

Fuel-cell vehicles have long promised several major advantages over those powered by electricity or hydrocarbons. The technology has only now begun to reach the stage where automotive companies are planning launches for consumers, however. Initial prices are likely to be in the range of $70,000 but should come down significantly as volumes increase within the next couple of years.

Unlike batteries, which must be charged from an external source and can take from five to 12 hours depending on the car and charger, fuel cells generate electricity directly, using hydrogen or natural gas. In practice, fuel cells and batteries are combined, with the fuel cell producing electricity and the batteries storing it until demanded by the motors that drive the vehicle. Fuel-cell vehicles are therefore hybrids and will likely also deploy regenerative braking, which recovers energy from waste heat, a key capability for maximizing efficiency and range.

Unlike battery-powered electric vehicles, fuel-cell powered ones have a long cruising range– up to 650 kilometers per tank (the fuel is usually compressed hydrogen gas); a hydrogen fuel refill only takes about three minutes. Hydrogen is clean-burning, producing only water vapor as waste, so fuel-cell vehicles using hydrogen will be zero-emission, an important factor given the need to reduce air pollution.

There are a number of ways to produce hydrogen without generating carbon emissions. Most obviously, renewable sources of electricity from wind and solar sources can be used to electrolyze water– although the overall energy efficiency of this process is likely to be quite low. Hydrogen can also be split from water in high-temperature nuclear reactors or created from fossil fuels such as coal or natural gas, with the resulting carbon dioxide captured and sequestered rather than released into the atmosphere.

As well as the production of cheap hydrogen on a large scale, a significant challenge is the lack of a hydrogen distribution infrastructure that would be needed to parallel and eventually replace gas and diesel filling stations. Long-distance transport of hydrogen, even in a compressed state, is not considered economically feasible today. Innovative hydrogen storage techniques, such as organic liquid carriers that do not require high-pressure storage, however, will soon lower the cost of long-distance transport and ease the risks associated with gas storage and inadvertent release.

Mass-market fuel-cell vehicles are an attractive prospect because they will offer the range and fueling convenience of today’s diesel and gas-powered vehicles while providing the benefits of sustainability in personal transportation. Achieving these benefits will, however, require the reliable and economical production of hydrogen from entirely low-carbon sources as well as its distribution to a growing fleet of vehicles, expected to number in the many millions within a decade.

2. Next-generation robotics

The popular fantasy has long foreseen a world where robots take over all manner of everyday tasks. This robotic future has stubbornly refused to materialize, however, with robots still limited to factory assembly lines and other controlled tasks. Although heavily used (in the automotive industry, for instance), these robots are large and dangerous to human co-workers; they have to be separated by safety cages.

Advances in robotics technology are making human– machine collaboration an everyday reality. Better and cheaper sensors make a robot more able to “understand” and respond to its environment. Robot bodies are becoming more adaptive and flexible, with designers taking inspiration from the extraordinary flexibility and dexterity of complex biological structures, such as the human hand. And robots are becoming more connected, benefiting from the cloud-computing revolution by being able to access instructions and information remotely, rather than having to be programmed as a fully autonomous unit.

The new age of robotics takes these machines away from the big manufacturing assembly lines and into a wide variety of tasks. Using GPS technology, just like smartphones, robots are beginning to be used in precision agriculture for weed control and harvesting. In Japan robots are being tried in nursing roles. They help patients out of bed, for example, and support stroke victims in regaining control of their limbs. Smaller and more dextrous robots, such as Dexter Bot, Baxter and LBR iiwa, are designed to be easily programmable and to handle manufacturing tasks that are laborious or uncomfortable for human workers.

Indeed, robots are ideal for tasks that are too repetitive or dangerous for humans to undertake, and can work 24 hours a day at a lower cost than human workers. In reality, new-generation robotic machines are likely to work together with humans rather than replace them. Even considering advances in design and artificial intelligence, human involvement and oversight will remain essential.

There remains the risk that robots may displace humans from jobs, although previous waves of automation have tended to lead to higher performance and growth, with benefits throughout the economy. Decades-old fears of networked robots running out of control may become more salient as next-generation robots are linked to the Web, but at the same time they will become more familiar as people employ domestic robots to do household chores. Undoubtedly, however, the next generation of robotics poses new questions about the human relationship with machines.

3. Recyclable thermoset plastics
A new kind of plastic to cut landfill waste

Plastics are divided into thermoplastics and thermoset plastics. The former can be heated and shaped many times and are ubiquitous in the modern world, making up everything from children’s toys to lavatory seats. Because they can be melted down and reshaped, thermoplastics are generally recyclable. Thermoset plastics, however, can only be heated and shaped once, after which molecular changes mean they are “cured,” retaining their shape and strength even when subjected to intense heat and pressure.

Due to this durability thermoset plastics are a vital part of our modern world. They are used in everything from mobile phones and circuit boards to the aerospace industry. But the same attributes that have made them essential in modern manufacturing also make them impossible to recycle. As a result, most thermoset polymers end up as landfill. Given the ultimate objective of sustainability, there has long been a pressing need for recyclability in thermoset plastics.

In 2014 critical advances were made in this area with the publication of a landmark paper in Science announcing the discovery of new classes of thermosetting polymers that are recyclable. Called poly(hexahydrotriazine)s, or PHTs, these can be dissolved in strong acid, breaking apart the polymer chains into component monomers that can then be reassembled into new products. Like traditional unrecyclable thermosets, these new structures are rigid, resistant to heat and tough, with the same potential applications as their unrecyclable forerunners.

Although no recycling is 100 percent efficient, this innovation– if widely deployed– should speed up the move toward a circular economy, with a big reduction in landfill waste from plastics. We expect recyclable thermoset polymers to replace unrecyclable thermosets within five years, and to be ubiquitous in newly manufactured goods by 2025.

After 36 year-old Hanan Mahmoud Abdul Karim gave birth to a 10.5-pound boy by cesarean section in April, she began suffer from stomach pains. However, the pain had nothing to do with the usual ones associated with childbirth; in this case, the Jordanian woman’s stomach actually began vibrating– that’s right, vibrating– once she arrived home with her son.

The reason for the vibrations? While the cesarean section ultimately led to the birth of a healthy baby, there was a bizarre and frightening complication with the procedure. According to Karim and family members who witnessed the unusual sounds and movements originating in her stomach area, the doctor who carried out the procedure in a private hospital in Jordan left his cell phone in her abdomen. Sadly, the private hospital where she gave birth apparently ignored the matter; Karim’s mother said, “I brought her back to the hospital where she was treated but nothing was done for her.”

X-ray reveals cell phone was left in woman’s stomach, but some say she made the story up. It was then that Karim, now experiencing severe pain, was taken to a public hospital. An X-ray confirmed the presence of a foreign object in her abdomen; indeed, a cell phone was then removed.

The terrifying situation was made known to the Jordanian parliament, which led parliament member Salim Al Bataynah to call on the Jordanian government to resign. Bataynah said, “In countries which show respect to their nations, and following such scandals, governments usually resign. The parliament should show accountability and be on the level of the case.”

While some feel this situation is a dreadful act that represents an increasing amount of carelessness in the medical profession, some have suggested that Karim made the story up. For example, Jordanian Health Ministry spokesman Hatem Al Azrae said that, although the ministry is following up on the problem, he feels that her story was “baseless and a fabricated one.”

Who would make something like that up? Never mind the fact that her stomach was buzzing, that she was in pain and a cell phone was removed from her abdomen after her cesarean section. How could someone make up something that actually ended up proving to be a reality?

From surgical mats to needles, growing concern exists over medical items left in people during surgery. Sad as this story is, Karim isn’t alone. Others before her have experienced serious medical neglect in the past, and many of the stories are so strange, it’s almost hard to believe they actually occurred.

One person who knows all too well how the medical system can jeopardize a person’s health is UK resident Michael O’Sullivan. He had a liver transplant in 2011, only to find out that a silicone surgical mat was accidentally left inside of his body. A spokesperson with Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge said, “We deeply regret the incident and have apologised to the patient.”

Elsewhere, in Germany, an elderly man who had surgery to treat his prostate cancer ended up having pains so severe that he could hardly sit. Why weren’t his wounds healing? You guessed it … surgeons performing his surgery left equipment in his body. However, we’re not talking about one item. Or two. Or even five. Let’s try 16. You read correctly. Sixteen medical items, ranging from a needle to a piece of a surgical mask, were left in his body, something which took more surgical treatments to remove.

Unfortunately, this sad phenomenon doesn’t look as though it’ll let up anytime soon. In fact, it’s estimated that approximately 1,500 people undergoing surgery have medical objects inadvertently left inside them.

“When there is significant bleeding and a sponge is placed in a patient, it can sometimes look indistinguishable from the tissue around it,” said Dr. Steven DeJong, vice chair of the department of surgery at Loyola University Chicago’s Stritch School of Medicine, Maywood, Illinois. “Unintentional retained sponges and instruments is a devastating complication for patients and is a national problem affecting every hospital in the country that performs invasive and surgical procedures.”
